IT Support as a First Job

Help desk is the common first IT job. A certificate can get an interview. It does not get you hired.

The IT pathways map puts support at the start of the operations path. This page is that first step, without the promise that a logo on your CV is a job offer.

  1. Help desk

Passwords, accounts, and a note of what you tried.

  2. A year of tickets

Proof you can explain a fix twice.

  3. Then systems or code

Cloud and development assume this, or something as concrete.

The first job, then the next

You will spend the day on other people’s interruptions. A password. A printer. An account for a new staff member. A laptop that will not join the network. The skill is not heroics. It is writing down what you tried, in an order someone else can follow, and knowing when to stop and ask.

If you dislike explaining the same fix in plain language, this job will feel worse than the advert. If you can do that calmly, you are already ahead of a lot of applicants.

You do not need a rack of servers. You need to be fluent at these:

  • Windows and a phone: accounts, updates, Wi-Fi, and what “turn it off and on” actually checks.
  • How email and a browser fail, in words a non-technical person can use.
  • A ticket: the problem, what you did, and whether it is finished.

CompTIA A+ and the Google IT Support certificate are the names that show up in adverts. Check the current price on the vendor’s own page before you pay. Do the free studying first. Search for the current official outline and follow that, not a dumped list of exam questions. Practising on a dumped paper is not the same as being able to fix a machine, and using stolen questions is not a qualification.

Bring two stories. Each one has a person, a broken thing, the steps you took, and how you knew it was fixed. A school lab, a church office, a family shop, and your own laptop all count. “I watched a video about Active Directory” does not.

Say what you will not pretend. If you have not managed a server, say so. Support jobs are hired to train that, or they are not. Read the advert before you claim the second kind of job is a first job.

A year of tickets is a real foundation for sysadmin, cloud operations, or a move toward development. It is not a wasted year. The map’s later branches assume you have done something like this, or something equally concrete.
